Manchester United announce the departure of Uruguay international Facundo Pellistri to Greek giants Panathinaikos.

Manchester United have announced the departure of Uruguay international Facundo Pellistri, with the attacker signing a long-term contract with Greek giants Panathinaikos.

The 22-year-old arrived at Old Trafford from Penarol in 2020, but he has only made 25 first-team appearances for Man United, spending time out on loan with Alaves and Granada during his time at Old Trafford.

Pellistri featured off the bench in the Community Shield against Manchester City earlier this month, but he was not in the squad for the team's opening match of the new Premier League season against Fulham.

There has been speculation surrounding the forward's future in recent days, and it has now been confirmed that he has completed a permanent switch to Panathinaikos.

"Facundo Pellistri has joined Panathinaikos on a permanent transfer. The Uruguay international, who represented his country at this summer's Copa America, is heading to the Greek Super League to continue his career," read a statement on the English club's official website.

Man United sell Pellistri to Panathinaikos

Panathinaikos are 20-time Greek champions, but they have not won the top flight since 2009-10 and finished down in fourth position last season.

The Greens are managed by Diego Alonso, who was Uruguay manager between 2021 and 2023, so Pellistri will reunite with his former international head coach in Greece.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Panathinaikos have paid a fixed fee of €6m (£5.1m) plus €2m (£1.7m) in add-ons, and there will be a buyback option valid until 2027.

Meanwhile, it is understood that Man United also have a 45% sell-on clause.

Pellistri made 14 appearances for the 20-time English champions in the first half of last season before moving to Granada, and he represented the club on 15 occasions in La Liga in the second half of the 2023-24 campaign, scoring twice.
