Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane opens up on his decision to join the Bundesliga champions over Manchester United ahead of Wednesday's Champions League clash.

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has revealed that he was always 'really excited' about the prospect of joining the German champions despite summer interest from Manchester United.

Two years after Spurs chairman Daniel Levy rebuffed Manchester City's advances for the England captain, Bayern were able to twist the Lilywhites chief's arm.

Following multiple rejected offers, Bayern finally struck a deal to bring Kane to the Allianz Arena for a club-record fee of £100m, beating Man United and Paris Saint-Germain to his signature.

At one stage, Old Trafford was thought to be Kane's most likely destination given his public desire to break Alan Shearer's all-time Premier League goalscoring record, but Levy refused to do business with a direct rival.

As a result, the Red Devils turned their attention to Rasmus Hojlund, and with Kane ruling out a possible move to PSG, Bayern shook hands with Levy on a nine-figure deal for the England captain, who was out of contract in 2024.

Despite enduring a miserable debut in a 3-0 German Super Cup loss to RB Leipzig, Kane has made a fast start to life in the Bundesliga with four goals from as many matches, in addition to one assist.

The 30-year-old's Champions League debut for Bayern will see him renew hostilities with Man United after the protracted summer transfer saga, as the Red Devils travel to the Allianz Arena for their opening Group A clash.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the mouthwatering showdown, Kane insisted that he holds a lot of respect for Man United, but he believes that he made the right decision by joining Thomas Tuchel's side.

"Obviously, over the summer I know there were some talks between a few clubs in the background, but Bayern were a team I was really interested and excited by," Kane told the press.

"There were not too many other discussions once they came in. It was between them and Tottenham to talk and then the deal got done. My focus is on here. Manchester United are a great club, a really big club as well. I just decided to come here and am really happy I have."

Since touching down in Germany with his family, Kane has become a father for the fourth time, although he admitted that he has not fully acclimatised to life in Bavaria just yet.

"Being here now, I am just enjoying the new surroundings. I have been back and forth with the internationals and the birth of my fourth child," the England captain added.

"I still don't feel I have fully settled into everything yet - that will take a bit more time - but over the course of the season I will get to know more about the club and speak to the big names who have played here before.

"I am really pleased to have scored the four goals so far. I think I can play better, and that will come with just getting to know my team-mates more, the system and the way we play. There is definitely room for improvement in my all-round game."

However, Kane will not be reuniting with England teammate Harry Maguire this week, as the Man United centre-back has been ruled out of the Red Devils' Champions League opener due to injury.
