Wigan Athletic striker Grant Holt believes that Wayne Rooney should be allowed to leave Manchester United.

Wigan Athletic striker Grant Holt has insisted that Manchester United should let Wayne Rooney leave.

The striker, who will line up against United today, believes that it could be best if a deal is agreed that suits all parties.

"I know what Wayne is going through and I have sympathy for him," Holt told the Daily Star.

"If he wants to go, he should be allowed to leave, as long as the money is right for all parties. I know he signed a contract and was happy to do so at the time, but he is obviously not happy.

"There is a lot of talk from fans about players' loyalty to their clubs, but what about clubs' loyalty to their players? You have to look at both sides and I'm sure, if United sell him, they will get a substantial figure."

Holt is expected to be part of the Wigan side that will take on United in the Community Shield this afternoon.
