Manchester United are allegedly prepared to part ways with an important defender if they receive a suitable proposal during the January transfer window.

Manchester United are allegedly open to parting ways with Tyrell Malacia during the January transfer window.

Having endured 16 months on the sidelines with a serious knee injury, Malacia has since been able to return to the United squad.

A total of five appearances have been made since November 28, there having been no rush for the Dutchman to accumulate game time.

The 25-year-old played the 30 minutes of extra time against Arsenal on Sunday as United battled their way to a famous penalty-shootout triumph over the Gunners with 10 men in the FA Cup.

Nevertheless, despite now reaching 226 minutes during his comeback, it appears that Malacia is not guaranteed to remain at Old Trafford.

United happy to sell Malacia?

As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, United are open-minded to cashing in on Malacia if they receive what he describes as "a good proposal".

Romano suggests that a permanent or a loan with buy option are possibilities at a time when Malacia is not close to holding down a spot in the team on a regular basis.

Although there have been reports of interest from Italian side Como, Romano claims there have been no discussions over a move to the Serie A side.

However, with United known to require sales or loan exits to free up funds in order to sign fresh faces, it appears that Malacia has been identified as a potential candidate to leave.

An exit that makes little sense?

Despite his limited game time since his return, Malacia showed enough during the latter stages against Arsenal that he can be an important member of the squad during a potentially-hectic second half of the campaign.

With Luke Shaw remaining out injured, Malacia is automatically promoted up the pecking order as Ruben Amorim's only natural left wing-back.

Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have been used regularly in the wing-back roles, each of them preferring to play on the right.

Although Amad Diallo can also be used in that role when required, Amorim's preference is to have the winger in the final third.

Any admirers of Malacia may also be against shelling out a substantial fee given his previous knee issues, meaning there may come a point where it makes more sense to keep Malacia as a squad option than lose someone that can provide depth on the flanks.
