Manchester United technical director Darren Fletcher wanted the club to sign Nathan Collins instead of Lisandro Martinez this summer, according to a report.
The Argentina international made the switch from Ajax to United in July, signing a five-year deal with an option for a further 12 months.
Martinez has started all six of United's Premier League games this season, while in the previous four league matches he has formed a successful central defensive partnership with Raphael Varane which has conceded only two goals.
Despite settling into his new surroundings, according to The Mirror, Martinez was not the first choice target for Fletcher, who was keen to sign Collins from Burnley.
However, Erik ten Hag ignored the advice of his technical director as he was determined to link up with the defender he previously managed at Ajax.
While Martinez completed his move to Old Trafford, Collins joined Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he has played every minute of all seven competitive games.
