Manchester United are reportedly contemplating whether to rival Liverpool in the race to sign Leeds United youngster Archie Gray.

Manchester United have reportedly identified Leeds United youngster Archie Gray as a potential transfer target.

While Gray has long been tipped as a top prospect at Elland Road, being just 17 years of age seemingly made it unlikely that he would be granted regular first-team football under Daniel Farke.

Instead, Gray has accumulated the third most minutes in the entire squad in the Championship, making 25 starts and two substitute outings in all competitions during 2023-24.

Although the majority of his outings have come in the unfamiliar role of right-back, the level of his performances there and in central midfield have further enhanced his reputation.

Leeds will hope that the teenager will eventually pen fresh terms as his current contract is due to expire at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

Nevertheless, some of the Premier League's top clubs are naturally beginning to circle for his signature, with Liverpool having previously been linked with a £40m offer.

Gray's versatility would theoretically be ideal for Jurgen Klopp, who views Trent Alexander-Arnold as his undisputed first choice at right-back, but it appears that the Merseyside giants could face stern competition.

According to Fichajes, United are toying with the idea of also making a bid for the England Under-20 international.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe hopeful of having the purchase of his 25% stake in United confirmed in due course, plans are being laid out over how to improve the squad.

As a result of United's well-documented issues with FFP, that will not materialise in the short term, with United effectively having to free up space in their squad before they can add to it.

However, it is anticipated that there will be more leeway in the summer and winning the race for a player of Gray's reputation would be a statement of intent.

United are well stocked for midfielders, yet there are doubts over the long-term futures of Casemiro and Sofyan Amrabat, while it is unclear whether Hannibal Mejbri will eventually cement a spot in the squad.

From Leeds' perspective, the rivalry between the clubs may be considered, although much may also depend on whether they are able to earn a return to the Premier League.
