MLS chief admits Bastian Schweinsteiger interest

MLS commissioner Don Garber admits that the league are interested in signing Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.

MLS commissioner Don Garber has confirmed that the league are interested in signing Manchester United's out-of-favour midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The German, 32, has made just 18 appearances for the Red Devils since joining from boyhood club Bayern Munich in 2015 and was frozen out of the first-team picture by Jose Mourinho upon his arrival at Old Trafford this summer.

A number of MLS clubs, including FC Dallas, have since expressed an interest in Schweinsteiger's signature, and Garber confirmed that the league would welcome the former Germany captain "with open arms".

"Of course we follow Bastian's situation," he told Kicker magazine. "He's an old acquaintance in the United States, for example through the 2014 World Cup, when he played against the US team. He also played against the MLS All-Stars with Bayern in 2014.

"We would welcome Bastian with open arms. He would be a leader for our many young players."

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan yesterday hit out at United for their treatment of his former national teammate, describing the club as "disrespectful".
