Manchester United's David Moyes defends Wayne Rooney salary

David Moyes defends Manchester United's decision to make Wayne Rooney the highest-paid footballer in Premier League history.

Manchester United manager David Moyes has defended the club's decision to make Wayne Rooney the best-paid footballer in Premier League history.

The England international striker signed a new contract with the Red Devils on Friday that will see him remain at Old Trafford until June 2019 and earn £300,000 per week.

"There are so many people employed by the football industry right now - and Wayne Rooney is right there at the top," The Mirror quotes Moyes as saying. "That's why he's among the best paid.

"There are thousands of people employed in football these days because of the money that is generated, mainly through television. Also a club like Manchester United fill their stadium and has people who do the best commercial work anywhere in football.

"So you say to a player like Wayne Rooney that if you take on that responsibility of playing for Manchester United, you are going to be one of the best paid."

Rooney was on target for United on Saturday as they defeated Crystal Palace 2-0 away from home in the Premier League.
