Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has made Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman his top transfer target this summer, according to reports.
The Dutchman joined the Italian side from PSV Eindhoven last summer in a deal worth around £16m, though that will not put off United, who are looking to strengthen their midfield.
Van Gaal is a keen admirer of the 24-year-old and, although he is ruled out of action until autumn with a knee injury, the Dutch coach wants him to move to Old Trafford ahead of next season, according to the Daily Express.
It is believed that Strootman would welcome the chance to link up with Van Gaal at United, as well as Robin van Persie, who is reportedly likely to become the club's new captain.
Roma want to keep Strootman at the Stadio Olimpico after some impressive performances in the Serie A last season.
It is understood that the Premier League side want to land the player for around £25m.
