Louis van Gaal wants Luke Shaw to miss England's U21 Euros campaign

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal urges England Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate not to pick Luke Shaw for the Euros this summer.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has stated that he wants full-back Luke Shaw to be left out of the England Under-21s squad for this summer's European Championships in the Czech Republic.

The 19-year-old has had a stuttered first season at Old Trafford due to numerous injury and fitness woes.

The latest news is that Shaw will miss Sunday's home match against Arsenal after he suffered a blow to the head during United's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace last weekend.

With Shaw's recent injury troubles in mind, Van Gaal has urged Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate to avoid selecting the left-back for the tournament.

"When you are not playing for Man United you cannot play for other teams," Van Gaal said in this afternoon's press conference. "He needs the rest. He is 19. We have to protect him. I hope that the coach of the Under-21s understands that."

Shaw joined United from Southampton for a reported fee of £30m last summer.
