Michael Carrick says that Danny Welbeck has a bright future ahead of him after his start to his England and Manchester United career.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has insisted that teammate Danny Welbeck has a bright future in the game.

The striker netted a brace during England's 5-0 thrashing of San Marino on Friday at Wembley and looks likely to retain his starting place on Tuesday for the trip to Poland.

Carrick is full of praise for his club teammate and feels that the 21-year-old has shown his worth for United despite the signing of Robin van Persie.

"I am a massive fan. I am probably a bit biased because of the United connection," said Carrick. "But ever since I have seen Danny I have been a huge fan and I expected big things of him. He has had a terrific couple of years now.

"People were looking at him when we signed Van Persie saying 'where is his position, where is he going to fit in?'. But he showed he is still a major part of it. We have got so much strength, but he has been terrific, and he was terrific again on Friday against San Marino.

"If he keeps performing like that he is only going to get better."

Welbeck has scored four goals during his 12 England caps.
