Rafael Marquez racing to be fit for World Cup after injury

Mexico captain Rafael Marquez is racing to be fit in time for the World Cup after sustaining an injury in the 3-1 friendly win over Ecuador on Saturday.

Mexico captain Rafael Marquez is facing an anxious wait to find out if he will be fit for the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

The former Barcelona man was forced off in Mexico's 3-1 win over Ecuador in Dallas on Saturday along with Luis Montes, who will miss the tournament with a broken leg.

Mexico are hoping that they will be able to call upon the experience of Marquez, with the initial tests showing that there is no fracture - though, they are still waiting on the X-ray results for confirmation.

Marquez posted on his Instagram: "Fortunately I have no fracture, I just need to wait for X-rays, but it seems that it is only a hit!

"Thank you all for your messages!"

Marquez has earned 118 caps for Mexico since making his debut in 1997.
