Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given has revealed that he wanted to extend his loan stay with Middlesbrough.
The Championship side failed to agree a deal this week to retain the 37-year-old's services, and Given will return to Villa Park after Saturday's match against Leeds United.
Given admits that he is disappointed that a proposed deal fell through.
"I would have liked to have stayed until the end of the season and try to help Boro climb the table but it was very much out of my hands and I have to go back to Villa," he told the Evening Gazette.
"But I will look back fondly on my time at Boro. I was delighted that Mr Karanaka brought me in. I've had great times here and enjoyed every minute of it."
Given has made 15 appearances for Boro.
