Millwall announce that they have appointed Joe Edwards - most recently in charge of England Under-20s - as their new head coach.

Millwall have announced that they have appointed Joe Edwards as the club's new head coach.

During the October international break, the Lions made the surprise decision to part ways with long-serving boss Gary Rowett.

With an alternative having not been in place, Adam Barrett has been in caretaker charge for the last four Championship fixtures, collecting just two points.

On the back of Saturday's last-gasp 1-0 defeat at home to Southampton, Millwall have revealed that they have brought in Edwards for his first senior role in club football.

The 37-year-old has long been regarded as one of the top young coaches in English football, spending time with the youth team and backroom staff at Chelsea.

Edwards was assistant to Frank Lampard during his time with the Blues and Everton, before most recently being in charge of England Under-20s.

However, Edwards now gets his chance in the main seat in the dugout at The Den, where he will hope to lead Millwall up the Championship table.

Speaking to the club's official website, Edwards said: "Firstly, it's a really proud day for me and my family. Although I have been coaching for a long time, a lot of people will be aware that this is my first job managing as Head Coach.

"Throughout the years, at various levels, you think you would like to have the opportunity to make the step up.

"To do it at a club like this, to be Head Coach of Millwall Football Club - I don't take that lightly at all. I'm really excited."

Millwall, who are in 18th position after a five-game winless streak, are next in action when they face Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon.
