MK Dons end winless run at Sheffield Wednesday's expense

MK Dons arrest a five-match winless streak by recording a 2-1 home victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

After failing to record a victory from any of their previous five Championship outings, MK Dons returned to winning ways this evening thanks to a 2-1 home triumph over Sheffield Wednesday.

That sequence of results had seen Karl Robinson's men slip into the drop zone, but goals from Carl Baker and Nicky Maynard have lifted the Dons up to 20th and one point above the relegation places.

Having applied some early pressure, the hosts broke the deadlock in the 25th minute. Maynard held off a challenge before rolling the ball into the path of Baker, who beat two men and then fired beyond the reach of Keiren Westwood in the Wednesday goal.

Westwood was forced to pick the ball out of the back of his net for a second time five minutes after the restart when Maynard scored his second goal of the campaign. Samir Carruthers picked out the striker and from 20 yards out he slotted the ball home.

Wednesday substitute Gary Hooper ensured that it was to be a nervy conclusion for the home fans when he swept in Ross Wallace's cross 13 minutes from time, but the Dons held out.

Like their hosts had done prior to this win, Wednesday have now gone five matches in all competitions without a win.
