The hosts took the lead with their next major chance when Ola Toivonen connected with Kamil Grosicki's cross to convert into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Victor Hugo Montano almost equalised for Montpellier in the 33rd minute with a header from the centre of the box, but he got too much on it and the ball flew over the crossbar.
However, the visitors did get back on level terms shortly after half time as Daniel Congre got his head onto a set-piece delivery from Siaka Tiene.
Things did not stay level for too long, however, with Toivonen grabbing his second of the night to put Rennes 2-1 ahead.
It looked as though Rennes would collect all three points, but Camara had other ideas as powered home a header after connecting with Remy Cabella's cross to earn the visitors a vital away draw.
