Match Analysis: Euro 2012 - Netherlands 1-2 Germany

The Netherlands' Euro 2012 campaign was made a whole lot tougher on Wednesday night as they were beaten 2-1 by Group B rivals Germany in Kharkiv.

With two defeats in two matches, Bert Van Marwijk's men remain in the tournament by only the slightest of margins.

In contrast, the Germans have taken a giant leap towards the quarter-finals thanks to Mario Gomez's slick brace.

Was the result fair?

Aside from the odd flash of menace in attack, the Netherlands played well below what they are capable of. The Germans, meanwhile, were solid across the pitch. They just did what they do best and that is work and win.

Netherlands' performance

Similar to their defeat against Denmark, the Netherlands were toothless up front. They had some glorious chances to take the initiative against their old foes, but some sloppy finishing ultimately cost them. They gave the ball away too much in defence too.

Germany's performance

There were again some outstanding performances in defence and attack for Joachim Low's team, but it's the midfield where they really excel. They may have been worried as the Dutch knocked on the door for an equaliser, but overall Germany were calm, assured and dangerous.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Mesut Ozil: Mario Gomez may have won the plaudits with his admirable brace, but Ozil caused enough problems to give the Dutch nightmares. He popped up everywhere and was able to drag defenders with him in order to create space for his teammates.

Referee performance

Multi-millionaire Jonas Eriksson gave a steady performance. There were times where Dutch frustration threatened to boil over, but he was able to keep the game flowing.

Biggest gaffe of the game

Following a frustrating 80-odd minutes, Arjen Robben had a right old sulk when he was substituted. A wonderful player, but also a stroppy one.

What next?

Netherlands: It's getting bleaker and bleaker for the Dutch. Two games played, zero points. Victory against Portugal will give them a chance as the group is still tight, but that might not even be enough.

Germany: Two wins out of two have given the Germans a great platform to progress to the quarter-finals. They're not quite there yet, mind, but a point against Denmark will see them through.
