David Villa gives New York City FC injury-time win over Vancouver Whitecaps

A 95th-minute penalty from David Villa earns New York City FC all three points in their away clash against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

New York City FC recorded a late win over the Vancouver Whitecaps thanks to an injury-time penalty from David Villa.

Mauro Rosales came closest to breaking the deadlock early on as the Vancouver midfielder's free kick whipped just past Josh Saunders' right-hand post.

Kekuta Manneh then tested the New York keeper, who was equal to the Gambian forward's strike.

Cristian Techera had the ball in the net for the Whitecaps after 26 minutes but the midfielder's effort was ruled out for offside.

Moments later, Frank Lampard put New York in front by converting in the box following a cross from on-loan Manchester City defender Angelino, who was supplied with the ball from an Andrea Pirlo pass.

Saunders was called into action straight away in the second half, saving Kendall Watson's goal-bound header from a Rosales free kick.

Vancouver then worked the ball into the New York box but forward Darren Mattocks was unable to make a telling connection.

Manneh went close from range in the 63rd minute, as did defender Jordan Harvey ten minutes later.

The Whitecaps found an equaliser late on through a Pedro Morales spot kick, which was awarded following an 88th-minute Jason Hernandez foul in the New York penalty area.

However, another penalty was awarded in the dying minutes of the tie as Lampard drew a foul inside the Whitecaps box.

New York skipper Villa stepped up and duly dispatched the 95th-minute spot kick to hand his side all three points.
