Half-Time Report: George Boyd gives Burnley lead

George Boyd's second goal of the season gives Burnley at 1-0 half time lead against Newcastle United in Tuesday evening's Premier League clash at Turf Moor.

The hosts threatened within the first few minutes as Danny Ings turned and fired at goal inside the box following some potent build-up play, but goalkeeper Rob Elliot pulled off a one-handed save to deny his effort.

As the game went on, things on the pitch remained tight and void of much action until the 21st minute, when Ings set up Ashley Barnes, but the striker's curling effort flew narrowly wide of goal.

Moments later, the Magpies registered their first effort on the Clarets' goal, Sammy Ameobi drawing a smart save down low from Tom Heaton.

Chances kept coming at either end, but in the 34th minute, the hosts broke the deadlock when Ings chested the ball down for Boyd, who took aim and struck a thunderous shot from 22 yards out that beat a stationary Elliot.
