Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff is reportedly a doubt for the remainder of the season due to a foot injury.

Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff is reportedly a doubt for the rest of the season.

Longstaff has featured regularly in the Newcastle midfield this season, scoring three goals and providing four assists in 40 competitive appearances.

The 25-year-old was forced off in the second half of Thursday's 4-1 win against Everton following a challenge from James Tarkowski.

Speaking after the win over the Toffees, Magpies boss Eddie Howe stated that he hoped the injury issue was "not too bad."

However, Longstaff was subsequently left out of Newcastle's 3-1 home victory against relegation-threatened Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Chronicle Live, there is doubt over whether the midfielder will be able to play against this season due to a foot problem.

The Magpies came from behind to claim all three points against the Saints thanks to a Callum Wilson brace and a Theo Walcott own goal.

Following the contest, Howe was unable to offer a timeframe on Longstaff's recovery, but he did provide an update on the extent of the injury.

"Sean picked up a knock on his foot," Howe told reporters. "We sent him for an X-ray and there's no break or fracture, so we just hope it's bad bruising.

"He wasn't able to perform for us today, but he'll hopefully be back very soon."

Newcastle could also be without Allan Saint-Maximin for the remainder of the campaign after Howe recently revealed that the winger is still recovering from a hamstring problem.

The winger returned to his native France to undergo treatment, but he is facing a race against time to play again this season.

Newcastle's win over Southampton moves them one step closer to ending their 20-year wait for Champions League football.

With five games remaining, the Magpies are sitting in third position, and they are nine points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool.
