Harry Redknapp rejects rumours linking him to Newcastle United job

Harry Redknapp rejects rumours that he has held talks with Newcastle United about replacing manager Steve McClaren.

Former Premier League manager Harry Redknapp has rubbished reports linking him to Newcastle United.

Steve McClaren is currently in charge of the Magpies, but there are rumours that the former England manager is on the verge of getting sacked.

The North-East outfit sit second from bottom in the league table, one point from safety after just two wins in their last 12 matches.

Former Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez is believed to be interested in the job, while Redknapp has also been touted as a potential candidate.

"No, I've never spoken to anybody at Newcastle," Redknapp told TV3. "Steve's still in a job. I like Steve McClaren. I've worked with Steve, he's an excellent coach, manager, whatever, but he needs a result quickly. But I've never spoken to them.

"I was getting on the plane today from Southampton, and everybody thought I was heading to Newcastle. I was heading to Dublin.

"If something came along that was interesting, I would. Most of the offers I'm getting at the moment are from far off places in the world where I don't feel like travelling to at the moment."

Redknapp has been out of work since leaving Queens Park Rangers in February 2015.
