Newcastle United owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi confirms that the club will not be moving stadiums, and they have begun plans to extend St James Park.

Newcastle United owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi has confirmed that plans to extend St James' Park have begun.

The stadium has not been expanded since 2000, but the club are now taking steps to do exactly that, and they have no intentions of building a brand new ground, despite any rumours.

Right now, 52,405 fans can fit in on a matchday, which makes St James' Park the eighth biggest stadium in the country, but there are intentions of making that even larger.

"We are working with the city and council to see what we can do. There are a lot of things that need to happen first, but that is the way forward," Mehrdad told The Athletic.

"If we can get it to 60 or 65,000 thousand, amazing, and we will look at every possibility. But are we going to build a new stadium? No. It would be like tearing your soul out."

The Magpies currently find themselves 17th in the Premier League table as they face Brentford today.
