Steve McClaren arrives at Newcastle United training ground

Under-pressure Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren arrives at the club's training base as a report claims that Rafael Benitez is keen on taking over.

Steve McClaren has been pictured arriving at Newcastle United's training ground this morning as speculation mounts regarding his future.

It is widely expected that the 54-year-old, who took charge at St James' Park last summer, will be relieved of his duties by the end of the week.

However, he has so far clung on to his job, with some reports having claimed that a scheduled make-or-break meeting with managing director Lee Charnley was cancelled yesterday afternoon.

Sky Sports News has claimed this morning that Rafael Benitez has indicated that he would be interested in replacing McClaren.

The outlet adds that talks between the Magpies and the Spanish coach's representatives have accelerated over the last 24 hours.

It is believed that the former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss could be in the Newcastle dugout for Monday's clash against league leaders Leicester City.
