Erik Pieters closes in on Newcastle United move

PSV Eindhoven defender Erik Pieters says he is closing in on a transfer to Newcastle United.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a move to the North East, but is unsure whether he has played his last game for PSV.

"If a club from the Premier League says they want you, and that is the case, then you know the financial means they have," Pieters told the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper.

"Whether I play for PSV at Excelsior on Sunday or am already at Newcastle I do not know. I have not seen much of Newcastle myself but my friend [Newcastle keeper] Tim Krul keeps me informed."

Pieters signed for PSV from Utrecht in 2008 for €2.5m (£2.2m) and has made 76 appearances for the club.
