Newport County have given manager John Sheridan permission to hold talks with Oldham Athletic regarding their managerial vacancy.
On Tuesday, Oldham sacked David Dunn just three months after he was appointed permanent coach.
It appears that the League One club aim to make a swift appointment as they have dropped down a division to contact Newport County.
A statement from the Exiles read: "Following last night's emergency board meeting, the board of directors can confirm they have given formal permission for John to discuss the current vacant managerial position at Oldham Athletic.
"The directors are keen to stress that they wish to conduct this process in a professional manner. The club is not currently seeking any applications for any potential vacant managerial positions. Further statements will be issued in due course."
Oldham are currently third from bottom in League One.
