Newport County sack manager Warren Feeney following eight-month spell

Newport County sack manager Warren Feeney following an eight-month spell in charge.

Newport County have announced the sacking of manager Warren Feeney following an eight-month spell in charge.

The 35-year-old was promoted from assistant coach to first-team manager in January when John Sheridan left the Welsh outfit.

Feeney managed to keep Newport afloat as they finished the campaign nine points above the relegation zone.

However, a poor start of five defeats, three draws and just one victory in the 2016-17 season has dropped the club to the bottom of the table on six points.

In a statement via the club's official website, Newport said: "Following a mixed start to the season the board of directors feel a change is necessary.

"We would like to thank Warren for his service since joining the club back in October 2015 and wish him all the best for his future career.

"The club is intending to make an appointment as soon as possible and will make an announcement in due course."

Assistant manager Andy Todd has also left the club, while first-team coaches Sean McCarthy and James Bittner will take caretaker charge for the time being.
