Luis Figo: 'A good day for football'

Former FIFA presidential candidate Luis Figo says that "change is finally coming" after the news of Sepp Blatter's resignation.

Former FIFA presidential candidate Luis Figo has described the resignation of FIFA president Sepp Blatter as a "good day" for football.

Figo withdrew from the race to challenge Blatter at last month's presidential election and described the Swiss's re-election as "one of the worst days" in FIFA history.

However, the Portuguese's mood improved this evening as he learned of Blatter's resignation and posted a statement on his Facebook page.

"A good day for FIFA and for football," it read. "Change is finally coming. I said on Friday that the day would come sooner or later. Here it is!

"Now we should, responsibly and calmly, find a consensual solution worldwide in order to start new era of dynamism, transparency and democracy in FIFA."

Figo has not yet indicated whether he will again stand for president in the election to decide Blatter's successor. Prince Ali, Blatter's closest rival in last month's election, and David Ginola have both confirmed that they will stand for president again.
