Alvin Martin says that divers should be handed bans in the Premier League.

Former England international Alvin Martin has demanded the introduction of bans in order to reduce diving in the Premier League.

Arsenal won a penalty against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday after Santi Cazorla went to ground in the box despite there appearing to be no contact from Steven Reid.

Ashley Young, Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale have all been criticised for going down to easily in recent times, and Martin believes that banning players who dive would soon remove the trait from football.

"What Arsene Wenger maybe can do is fine the player but I do feel we have to start taking retrospective action. We have to start looking at it now. It was terrible really," Martin told talkSPORT.

"I think we need a panel now that's going to sit, and it only has to sit for three weeks, start suspending players and then the managers will sit their players down and say, 'right, we're being hurt now'.

"You've got to hurt the managers. If you hurt the managers with suspensions they will then crack down on the players and we all know if they do it they're the leaders. I think then you'll find it'll clear itself up in a matter of weeks."

Martin earned 17 caps for England.
