UEFA "astonished" by FIFA corruption allegations

UEFA claims that they are "astonished and saddened" by corruption allegations surrounding FIFA.

UEFA have claimed that they are "astonished and saddened" by the latest corruption allegations surrounding FIFA.

Multiple FIFA officials were arrested in Zurich on Wednesday morning by US authorities for alleged racketeering, money laundering and wire fraud.

A separate corruption investigation has been opened by Swiss prosecutors into the allocation of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, which are due to be held in Russia and Qatar respectively.

"UEFA is astonished and saddened by the events which have taken place earlier today in Zurich and is now waiting for additional information," a spokesman is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

"An informal meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee will take place this afternoon in Warsaw prior to the UEFA Europa League final."

Friday's FIFA presidential election is still due to go ahead, with Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein standing as the only rival to current president Sepp Blatter.
