Iain Dowie emerges as an early contender to replace Nigel Worthington as coach of Northern Ireland.

Iain Dowie has said that he would be interested in succeeding Nigel Worthington as manager of Northern Ireland.

Former Norwich City boss Worthington announced earlier today that he would be stepping down from the position after tomorrow's Euro 2012 qualifier with Italy.

Dowie, who was born in England, represented Northern Ireland on 59 occasions, scoring 12 goals in the process.

"The proudest moment of my career was captaining my country," the 46-year-old told Sky Sports News. "I had a fantastic relationship with the Green and White Army, they were amazing.

"I feel my CV stands up to scrutiny and I'm always happy to help.

"I played for Northern Ireland and I would never turn my back on them. I would be happy to have conversation with them."

He has had previous spells in charge of Oldham Athletic, Crystal Palace, Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, Queens Park Rangers and Hull City.
