Oldham Athletic 'deny chairman Simon Corney quit over Ched Evans controversy'

Oldham Athletic reportedly reject rumours that chairman Simon Corney has stepped down over the Ched Evans controversy.

Oldham Athletic have reportedly rubbished reports that chairman Simon Corney has stepped down amid the controversy regarding convicted rapist Ched Evans.

The League One club were poised to sign the 26-year-old, who has been searching for a new club following his release from prison in October.

The former Sheffield United striker served half of a five-year sentence for raping a 19-year-old woman at a hotel.

After numerous club sponsors threatened to walk away from Oldham over the controversial move, news emerged today claiming that the proposed deal is off.

As a result, it was rumoured that Corney had decided to quit, but according to Sky Sports News, the club have confirmed that the chairman remains in his position.

After news emerged claiming that the deal had fallen through, Evans released a statement via the Professional Footballers' Association apologising "for the effects" of his actions back in 2011.
