Late Byron Moore goal sinks Burnley

Byron Moore scores with eight minutes remaining as Port Vale beat Burnley 1-0 to reach the second round of the League Cup.

Byron Moore struck an 82nd-minute winner as Port Vale dumped Championship side Burnley out of the League Cup tonight.

Fifteen minutes elapsed before either side fashioned a chance in a tepid opening at Vale Park, and it was for the hosts as Ebo Andoh fired over following a free kick.

The contest sparked into life on the half-hour mark when Jak Alnwick pulled off a smart stop to keep out Michael Kightly, before George Boyd fired wide from the rebound.

Determined to make things right, Boyd tried his luck from 25 yards minutes later but the ex-Hull City man dragged his left-footed drive narrowly wide.

Little could separate the duo in the remainder of the half as the second period looked poised to be another tight affair.

The Clarets began the second half brightly, as Boyd once again came close before Jelle Vossen's ambitious overhead drifted just wide on the 60-minute mark.

Burnley grew more dangerous as the minutes ticked on, and Kightly was denied once more by Alnwick in what was shaping up to be an interesting duel between the pair.

Rob Page's men made Sean Dyche and co pay for their profligacy when Moore's effort was adjudged to have crossed the line after the referee and his officials conferred.
