Portsmouth are relegated to the third tier of English football after results fail to go their way this afternoon.

Portsmouth have been relegated to League One after results failed to go their way this afternoon.

Pompey needed all three points against Derby and required Bristol City to lose against Barnsley.

In the end neither of the above materialised, meaning that Michael Appleton's men will play in the third tier of English football for the first time in 29 years.

The game against Derby this afternoon began in a scrappy manner with neither side creating much in the final third as news of Bristol's opener against Barnsley filtered through the Pompey fans midway through the half.

The home fans' misery was compounded four minutes before the break when Jake Buxton stooped to nod home Jamie Ward's corner to give Derby the lead.

After the interval Dave Kitson wasted Pompey's best chance by blazing over from inside the area before Scott Allan cracked an effort against the crossbar minutes later.

Pompey did have an equaliser soon after as Luke Varney swept home but parity didn't last long as Steven Davies converted a spot kick for the Rams after Ward tumbled in the area.

The hosts failed to find an equaliser in the final ten minutes and now lie seven points adrift of safety with just one game of the season remaining.
