Manager Harry Redknapp opted to play without a striker at Vicarage Road, with Niko Kranjcar the most advanced of their midfielders and he came closest to breaking the deadlock.
The Croatian international playmaker saw two long-range shots go narrowly wide of the post and Watford were largely limited to efforts from distance themselves.
Lewis McGugan sent a 22-yard volley high into the stands, before QPR started to dominate proceedings and had half-chances through Junior Hoilett and Matt Phillips.
Phillips curled a left-footed shot just off target, while Hoilett was released into the box but got the ball caught under his feet.
Hoilett was then foiled by Hornets goalkeeper Manuel Almunia, who required treatment for a head injury before resuming play.
