Real Betis see off Rayo Vallecano to climb up to eighth

Goals from Heiko Westermann and Ruben Castro help Real Betis to a 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano in La Liga's early Sunday kickoff.

Real Betis have moved up to eighth place in the La Liga table courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano

The first real shot of the contest was fired in by Vincenzo Rennella, who looked to make an early breakthrough for the visitors with his attempt.

Pepe Mel's side did not have to wait much longer to break the deadlock, though, as Ruben Castro and Heiko Westermann linked up well for the latter to fire home.

Castro looked to add a second before the break only to miss the target, but he did get his name on the scoresheet an hour in when some good play by Alvaro Cejudo saw him played through on goal.

Cristiano Piccini and Joaquin both had chances to extend the Verderones' lead, although it did not matter in the end as they comfortably saw out the remainder to take all three points.
