Brynjar Gunnarsson has revealed his desire to sign a new contract at Reading, but he will only do so if he remains in Brian McDermott's first-team plans.
The 36-year-old is being lined up for a non-playing role at the club, but wants to focus on gaining a place in the playing squad at the Madejski Stadium.
Gunnarsson said: "Fitting into the squad is the main thing for me and hopefully I can play some part.
"I want to be in the 25-man squad and involved as a team and I will probably be involved in coaching somewhere too."
Reading were promoted to the Premier League after winning the Championship last season.
