Xabi Alonso targets Champions League final

Xabi Alonso targets a Champions League final for Real Madrid to distract attention from their poor league showing.

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has said that the club are targeting the final of the Champions League to make up for the disappointing league season.

Alonso admitted that reaching the final will not be easy, but Real are planning to get a good result in the home quarter-final against Galatasaray on Wednesday.

"Everybody associated with the club is eager to reach the final, but there are a number of steps to take before getting there and Wednesday's game against Galatasaray is the first, playing at home," Marca quotes Alonso as saying.

"We want a good result and I'm sure we're going to see a good game with a great atmosphere.

"Our situation in the league isn't ideal, but we have to continue as we are, playing well and trying to win every game."

Real are currently 13 points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona.
