Goals from Raul Garcia and Jose Gimenez helped Atletico Madrid record a 2-0 win over Real Madrid in the first leg of their last-16 Copa del Rey clash on Wednesday.

Both strikes came in the second period, with Garcia netting from the penalty spot and Gimenez finding the corner with a header.

The second leg at the Bernabeu will take place next Thursday.

ATLETICO

Goal

Jan Oblak: Made an excellent save early on to deny Sergio Ramos from close range, while the stopper was strong from crosses throughout the 90 minutes. Positive night for the Slovenian. (7/10)

Defence

Jesus Gamez: Was one of six Atletico players to pick up a booking, but the card demonstrated his desire. Had a good night filling in for first-choice right-back Juanfran. (7/10)

Diego Godin: When is the centre-back ever anything less than excellent? Marshalled his back four - which included two teenagers - during another towering performance. (8/10)

Jose Gimenez: Continues to keep Miranda out of the side and looks the full package at the age of 19. Defended excellently and scored his side's second with a towering header. (9/10)

Lucas Hernandez: Usually a centre-back, but the 18-year-old filled in at left-back against Real Madrid. Put in the type of performance that defied his tender years. (7/10)

Midfield

Mario Suarez: Did not influence the match too much in terms of ball possession, but the Spaniard was a willing worker in defensive areas throughout the evening. (7/10)

Gabi: Set up Gimenez for Atletico's second in what was another impressive night for the Spaniard. Captained the home team expertly from the middle of the park. (7/10)

Raul Garcia: Won and then scored his side's penalty just before the hour. Heavily involved in forward areas, but always aware of his duties at the other end. (8/10)

Attack

Antoine Griezmann: Entered the match having netted five goals in his last two games, but the Frenchman could not register here despite a couple of half-chances. (6/10)

Fernando Torres: Worked ever so hard on his second Atletico debut, but the Spaniard is still lacking fitness. Looks pleased to have returned home. (6/10)

Saul Niguez: Given the nod in place of the rested Arda Turan and the Spaniard put on a good show. Not too much in the final third, but helped his side defensively on a number of occasions. (6/10)

Substitutes

Koke: Entered just after Atletico had taken the lead and the Spaniard immediately picked up the pace of the match. Radiated class each time he had possession of the ball. (7/10)

Arda Turan: Given the final 20 minutes at the Calderon, but the Turkish international, who has been in fine form this season, did not see too much of the ball. (6/10)

Mario Mandzukic: Replaced Griezmann 15 minutes from time and the big Croatian helped his side retain possession in the latter stages. (6/10)

REAL MADRID

Goal

Keylor Navas: Made a smart save to deny Griezmann in the first period on what was a rare start for the Costa Rican and he cannot really be blamed for either Atletico goal. (6/10)

Defence

Alvaro Arbeloa: Lucky not to be sent off late on following a horror challenge on Gabi. Ventured forward on plenty of occasions, but the right-back's delivery was extremely poor. (5/10)

Raphael Varane: Made a stunning challenge on Griezmann in the first period and looked composed at the heart of the defence. Now desperately needs a run in the XI. (7/10)

Sergio Ramos: Should have scored early on, but saw his powerful header saved by Oblak. Gave away a second-half penalty for a pull on Garcia inside the box. (6/10)

Marcelo: Threatened to get forward throughout the match, but the Brazilian's final ball was disappointing. That said, he made a couple of crucial blocks in the first period. (6/10)

Midfield

Sami Khedira: Given a rare start despite speculation surrounding his future and the German put on a decent display without pulling up too many trees. (6/10)

Toni Kroos: Was the pick of his side's midfielders on the night. Classy in possession of the ball and had a couple of long-range attempts, but needed more from those around him. (7/10)

Isco: Has been in such fine form this season, but the Spaniard struggled here. Showed glimpses of his quality, but faded in and out of the match. (6/10)

Attack

Gareth Bale: Had a first-half header ruled out for offside on what was a frustrating evening for the Welshman. Had a couple of long-range attempts, but could not test Oblak. (6/10)

Karim Benzema: Made some good runs in the first period, but faded as the match gathered pace. Was replaced by Jese Rodriguez after 75 minutes. (6/10)

James Rodriguez: Still working his way back to fitness following an injury. Struggled in open play, while his set-piece delivery was also inconsistent. (6/10)

Substitutes

Cristiano Ronaldo: Certainly made an impact during his 30 minutes on the field, but this time, the Portuguese could not inspire his side. (6/10)

Jese Rodriguez: Offered Los Blancos a different threat in the final third, but like a number of his teammates, the Spaniard struggled against a brilliant defence. (6/10)

Dani Carvajal: Replaced Arbeloa late on and put in a couple of dangerous crosses. (6/10)
