Real Madrid have revealed that both Marcelo and Luka Modric have tested positive for coronavirus.
Marcelo has been used sparingly by Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti during the 2021-22 campaign, making just five appearances in all competitions, while he has only played 89 minutes of La Liga football this term.
Modric, though, has been a vital player for the La Liga leaders this season, featuring on 18 occasions in all competitions, contributing five assists in the process.
A statement from Real Madrid on Wednesday morning confirmed that both players had tested positive for the virus, meaning that they are set to be absent against Cadiz and Athletic Bilbao on December 19 and December 22 respectively.
Marcelo's contract at the Bernabeu is due to expire next June, and the 33-year-old is unlikely to pen an extension, with a return to Brazil believed to be a strong possibility.
Modric, meanwhile, is also out of contract next June, but Real Madrid are working to sign the 36-year-old to a fresh deal due to his importance for Ancelotti's side.
