Iker Casillas admits that spending so long on the substitutes' bench at Real Madrid has affected his chances for Spain.

Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas has admitted that he has suffered after being left out of Real Madrid's team during the last few months of the season.

The 32-year-old was dropped after falling out with then coach Jose Mourinho and believes that his international rivals Victor Valdes and Pepe Reina have gained an advantage.

He did reveal that his time out has made him appreciate playing more, following his first-half appearance in Spain's win over Haiti.

"I've been out about four months," Casillas told reporters. "After so long without playing, I was both happy and nervous tonight.

"I see myself fighting for a spot from the start with a disadvantage to my peers, going up against Pepe and Victor.

"Not playing for long puts a dent in a player like me. Sometimes it is good to go through that, to appreciate it more when you play."

Casillas reprised his role as captain for the game against Haiti and was replaced at half time by Reina.
