Sergio Ramos: "We have lost an icon"

Real Madrid centre-back Sergio Ramos says that the club "have lost an icon" following the passing of Alfredo Di Stefano, who died aged 88 on Monday.

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has said that Los Blancos "have lost an icon" following the passing of Alfredo Di Stefano on Monday.

The Argentine-born footballer died aged 88 on Monday after failing to recover from a heart attack.

Iker Casillas, from the club's presidential box, paid his own tribute earlier today and now Spanish centre-back Ramos has followed suit by speaking about the Madrid legend.

"We have lost an icon, a standard-bearer, someone who played a big role in making this badge what it is," said Ramos.

"Don Alfredo symbolised all the values represented by Real Madrid. Every future Real Madrid player will have the duty to know what Di Stefano meant to this club.

"His spirit will live on forever. The words "give up" were never part of his vocabulary. My Decima-winning header had something of his spirit in it".

Di Stefano won five European Cups with Madrid during his time in the Spanish capital.
