Cristiano Ronaldo: 'I have changed as a player'

Real Madrid attacker Cristiano Ronaldo says that he has developed into "a penalty area player" after starting his career as an out-and-out winger.

Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted that he has been forced to change as a player in order to continue his goal-scoring exploits.

The 30-year-old arrived at Manchester United in 2003 as an out-and-out winger, but started to move into a more central position before making the switch to Real Madrid in 2009.

Ronaldo has netted 323 goals in 309 games for his Spanish club and he has said that record has been reached because he is more of "a penalty area player".

"It's different. I'm a penalty area player, not so much on the wings, because goals are scored in the area and near the goal, so my position has changed a little," Ronaldo told Marca.

"And the instinct for goals, too, is learned over time and experience. It was something that came naturally and in a way that makes me happier. There's evolution I've had during my career since I started playing to now and it's good for me. I've evolved."

On Tuesday, Ronaldo was awarded the Golden Boot trophy for the fourth time in his career after finishing the 2014-15 season as Europe's leading scorer.
