Pep Guardiola: 'Bayern Munich wanted Toni Kroos stay'

Bayern boss Pep Guardiola reveals that he would have preferred Toni Kroos to remain at the Allianz Arena following his Real Madrid switch.

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has revealed that he did his utmost to convince Toni Kroos to ink a contract extension at the Allianz Arena.

The Germany international sealed a big-money switch to La Liga giants Real Madrid last week, having only had one year remaining on his existing deal in Bavaria.

Nevertheless, Kroos helped Bayern to Bundesliga glory in Guardiola's maiden season last term, and the Spaniard hopes that he enjoys a fruitful spell in the Spanish capital.

"We tried to convince him to stay at the club but I understand. He is young and wants new challenges. It is his decision and we have to respect that," he told a press conference.

"I hope he is happy in Madrid. It was an honour to be his coach. I wish the very best to him and his family. At the same time I want to say thank you for what he did last season."

The 24-year-old signed a six-year deal at the Santiago Bernabeu.
