New York Red Bulls defeat nine-man Real Salt Lake

New York Red Bulls defeat Real Salt Lake 1-0 in the MLS thanks to a Mike Grella strike.

New York Red Bulls have defeated Real Salt Lake 1-0 in the MLS.

Mike Grella gave New York an early lead, netting his fourth goal of the season after four minutes.

Devon Sandoval had a good chance to bring the scores level just three minutes later but his header was saved in the bottom left corner by Luis Robles.

It was Anatole Abang's turn to come close to scoring in the 10th minute, but this time Nick Rimando made the save.

Javier Morales made things even harder for Real Salt Lake in the 40th minute when he was shown a red card after a strong challenge on Felipe.

Grella had two shots saved early in the second half before Real Salt Lake were reduced to nine men in the 52nd minute.

Demar Phillips was the man who received his marching orders after a late sliding tackle.

Grella came close to adding a second in the closing stages when his header went narrowly over the bar.
