New York Red Bulls go top of Eastern Conference

New York Red Bulls book their place in the MLS playoffs with a 3-0 win over Houston Dynamo to secure top spot in the Eastern Conference.

New York Red Bulls have confirmed their place in the MLS playoffs with a 3-0 win over Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Tim Cahill, Ibrahim Sekagya and Bradley Wright-Phillips scored the goals to earn all three points for Mike Petke's men, which takes them to the summit of the MLS Eastern Conference.

It was a blistering start from the Red Bulls as former Everton midfielder Cahill brought Dax McCarty's pass under control before firing into the top corner after just seven seconds.

Sekagya struck just after the hour mark to rest the nerves of the travelling fans, and Phillips made sure of victory in the 74th minute.

Dynamo remain level on points with New England Revolution with just DC United left to play.

The Revolution will earn their place in the playoffs if they beat Columbus Crew in their final outing.
