Valencia have moved five points clear of fourth place Levante with a goalless draw at Atletico Madrid.

Diego Alves came to Valencia's rescue early in the match when he pushed away Adrian's back post header after only four minutes.

As both side's failed to settle, it took until midway through the half for another chance to be created as Pablo Piatti's stinging volley was parried by Thibaut Courtois in the Madrid goal.

Falcao came close for the hosts towards the end of the half, but the striker could only put his header over from Adrian's flick on.

The Colombian was inches away from giving Atletico the lead just after the hour when his shot deflected off Adil Rami and just past the post.

As both sides began to drive forward, Jordi Alba's drive flew narrowly wide, while Diego's powerful strike was punched away by Alves. However, neither side could find the decisive touch in front of goal.
