Scottish Football Association hits out at Team GB proposal

The SFA criticises their English counterparts' proposal to enter Great Britain football teams at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The Scottish Football Association has hit out at its English counterpart's proposal to enter Great Britain football teams at the 2016 Olympics.

Britain had men's and women's teams play at the London Games, though the FA claimed that their entries were a one-off.

However, the FA recently wrote to the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish FA's to ask if they would be interested in taking part in Rio de Janeiro next year.

Welsh FA president Trefor Lloyd Hughes has claimed that he is "livid" at the proposal, and now the SFA has added its voice to criticism of the idea.

"We have been consistently clear in our opposition to Team GB and, in particular, the threat it poses to our independent membership of FIFA and also our representation on the International Football Association Board," an SFA spokesman is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

Both men's and women's British teams were knocked out in the quarter-finals of London 2012.
