Rochdale beat Charlton Athletic to seal their League One survival at the expense of Oldham Athletic on the final day of the season.

Rochdale have sealed their League One survival on the final day of the season courtesy of a 1-0 win over Charlton Athletic.

Keith Hill's side went into the final match of the campaign sitting in the last relegation place, but Joe Thompson's second-half strike was enough for Dale to leapfrog Oldham Athletic in the table after the Latics could only manage a 2-2 draw with Northampton Town.

The stalemate at Sixfields also confirmed Northampton's relegation to League Two alongside Oldham, although the Cobblers would have needed an unlikely swing in goal difference to have stayed up on the final day anyway.

Oldham and Northampton join MK Dons and Bury in being relegated from the third tier this season, with Rochdale ultimately staying up by just one point.

Plymouth Argyle's slim hopes of sneaking into the final playoff spot were ended by a 5-2 defeat to Gillingham as Charlton held on to sixth place despite their defeat at Rochdale.

The League One playoffs will consist of Shrewsbury Town, Rotherham United, Scunthorpe United and Charlton.

Wigan Athletic wrapped up the League One title meanwhile, with their 1-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers - who were without manager Darren Ferguson due to a serious family issue - enough to hold off the challenge of Blackburn Rovers, who are forced to settle for second place.
