Roma looked comfortable from kickoff, as veteran midfielder Seydou Keita came close to opening the scoring after four minutes, but the Mali international's header went just over the bar.
Eden Dzeko almost found the net after picking up a Radja Nainggolan through-ball in the box, but his effort was saved by Zeljko Brkic in the Carpi goal.
Roma took the lead on 24 minutes through Kostas Manolas, who fired past Brkic from a corner.
The hosts doubled their lead four minutes later, as Miralem Pjanic found the bottom-left corner of the Carpi goal with an well-struck free kick.
Gervinho added his side's third goal on 31 minutes, as the Ivorian winger pounced onto a parried Maicon strike to find the back of the net.
Former Italy international Marco Boriello pulled a goal back for Carpi three minutes later, as the striker met a Gabriel Silva cross with a diving header.
Roma came close to a fourth goal before the break, as William Vainqueur struck from outside the penalty area, but his effort was saved by Brkic.
