Preview: Charlton Athletic vs. Rotherham United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Charlton Athletic and Rotherham United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Two teams at opposite ends of the League One table will compete on Tuesday when fourth-placed Rotherham United travel to The Valley as they look to extend their 14-game unbeaten run.

Charlton Athletic sit just one place above the relegation zone by goal difference, but they do have momentum behind them after consecutive victories.

It has been a difficult season so far for Charlton Athletic, who have only won four of their opening 15 fixtures in League One, which has seen them sink to 20th in the table.

They are a long way from where they found themselves at the end of the 2020-21 campaign though, where they missed out on the playoffs by goal difference, as they now sit above the relegation zone.

However, the Addicks have enjoyed a rise in performance quality as of late, having won their previous two outings against Sunderland and Doncaster Rovers.

Impressively, Charlton have not conceded in either of those matches either, with their efforts offensively being just as strong at the weekend when they scored four.

Elliot Lee, Conor Washington, Jayden Stockley and Ben Purrington all got themselves on the scoresheet against Rovers and they shall now be looking for a repeat of that performance on Tuesday night.

However, they come up against a Rotherham United team in fantastic form right now, having not lost a game since August when they faced Sheffield Wednesday, which has created a 14-match run without a defeat.

This has helped them to reach fourth in the table, with the strongest goal difference in the entire division, which is down to their efforts defensively and offensively.

Paul Warne's squad were able to put five past Sunderland at the weekend, with braces from Michael Smith and Freddie Ladapo as well as a goal by Michael Ihiekwe helping them secure their latest victory.

The Millers currently trail league leaders Plymouth Argyle by just three points, but they also have a game in hand which will make Tuesday's fixture even more important.

Team News

Jason Pearce started at the back during Charlton's win against Doncaster Rovers due to Sam Lavelle's groin injury, and that is set to be the case once again in midweek.

Jake Forster-Caskey is also out of action for the Addicks at the moment, but he has recently returned to training on the grass as he nears his return to the pitch following an ACL injury.

After being unable to play against Sunderland at the weekend as they are his parent club, Will Grigg will once again be available for the Millers.

However, after scoring a brace during the 5-1 victory, Ladapo might have done enough to maintain his own place in the starting XI, providing Warne with a tough decision to make.

Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
MacGillivray; Gunter, Pearce, Famewo, Purrington; Dobson, Leko, Gilbey, Lee; Stockley, Washington

Rotherham United possible starting lineup:
Vickers; Edmonds-Green, Ihiekwe, Harding; Barlaser, Ogbene, Ferguson, Rathbone, Wiles; Smith, Ladapo

We say: Charlton Athletic 0-2 Rotherham United

Charlton Athletic have certainly improved their form as of late, but this is going to be a tough test against a team that have proven themselves to be hard to beat.

The visitors should have enough attacking quality in order to see them through this particular fixture, which should allow them to take all three points.
